The mission of the Hospital Chaplains is to provide Catholic pastoral priestly care and the sacraments to Catholics who are patients at hospitals in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. The Catholic Services Appeal Foundation funds the salaries for 9 chaplains who serve the following 13 area hospitals:
- Abbott Northwestern Hospital
- Children’s Hospital – Saint Paul
- Fairview Southdale Hospital
- Hennepin County Medical Center
- Mercy Hospital
- Methodist Hospital
- North Memorial Medical Center
- Regions Hospital
- St. John’s Hospital – Maplewood
- United Hospital
- Unity Hospital
- University of Minnesota
- University of Minnesota – Fairview
This program is unique in that the hospitals provide no funding for the chaplains.
We estimate the daily Catholic census at these hospitals is 638. Using an average stay of two days, over 100,000 Catholics “move” through these 13 area hospitals every year.
The estimated number of daily communions, based upon the estimates provided by the chaplains is between 390 (using 30 communions a day at each hospital) and 520 (using 40 communions a day at each hospital). On any given day, there are upwards of 100 Catholics receiving the sacrament of the sick (anointing) at the 13 hospitals.
