The American Indian Ministry operates at the Parish of Gichitwaa Kateri (Saint Kateri Tekakwitha) in South Minneapolis. These American Indians in our own community who participate in the cultural and social programs facilitated by this ministry belong to an even larger community of American Indians on a regional and national level. People from this parish have the opportunity to attend a conference held in different cities across the country each year which allow for American Indian Catholics from different tribes across the United States to meet and spend time together.
This year marks the 77th Tekakwitha Conference which will be held in Burlingame, California from July 20 – 24. The mission of this conference is to be the “the Voice, Presence and Identity of Indigenous Catholics of North America under the protection and inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.” The conference is jam packed with copious opportunities for prayer, the sacraments, and healing services while also offering other activities such as talks and breakout sessions. Finally, this time together is really a large celebration as one community honoring each other’s tribal roots, sharing experiences, and building lasting connections with fellow American Indian Catholics across the United States.
As the Tekakwitha Conference approaches, the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation invites you to take a moment to pray, specifically asking for the intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, patroness of this national conference. May our American Indian brothers and sisters return from this conference having experienced even more fully the beauty of their culture and the love of Jesus Christ.
O Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, your love for Jesus,
so strong, so steadfast, grant that we may become like you.
Your short and painful life showed us your strength and humility.
Grant that we may become forever humble like you.
Like the bright and shining stars at night, we pray that your light may forever
shine down upon us, giving light, hope, peacefulness and serenity in our darkest moments.
Fill our hearts, Saint Kateri with your same love for Jesus and grant us your strength and courage to become one like you in Heaven.
